Schaffhausen Nature Park and Neckertal Nature Park

Far from the madding crowd, these two nature parks lure walking, cycling and boat enthusiasts. The Rhine flows swiftly past gently rolling hills and vineyards in the pretty Schaffhausen region, while the Neckertal Nature Park in the heart of Eastern Switzerland is dotted with quaint villages and cosy inns.

Untersee-Hochrhein: rendez-vous with Napoleon III

The Untersee is seen at its picture-book best from the Königsetappe (King's Stage). Part of the Thurgauer circular hiking trail, the 20km route between Kreuzlingen and Steckborn takes in palaces and castles such as Arenenberg, where Napoleon III once sojourned.

UNESCO World Heritage abbey district of St Gallen

A Unesco World Heritage site, St Gallen's abbey district, complete with baroque cathedral, library and archives, is a magnificent cultural ensemble. The abbey is the centrepiece of the old town, where stately houses are brightly painted and adorned with oriel windows and first-floor taverns serve traditional food with a pinch of culture.

    St. Galler Bratwurst *

    Made with veal, pork and milk, this soft white sausage is a real delicacy. Eat the bratwurst like a local - with bread but no mustard.

    Thurgau Apples

    Crunchy, pithy and delightfully tangy, Thurgau's famous apples are enjoyed in many different ways - as cider, cakes, tarts and fresh from the tree. They're also the perfect snack for walking and cycling tours.

    Schaffhauser Pinot Noir

    Amber-hued new wines, refreshing rosés, sweet ice wines and classic red wines - pinot noir is the most versatile of grapes. Some 500 vintners make pinot noirs in this region. Cheers!
