Intro

Nepal and the Valais have a lot in common. The educational trail along the Massa Trail shows in a remarkable way the parallels between the two cultures.

Already a century ago man-made channels assisted the transport of essential water supplies from streams to the crop growing areas in the Swiss mountains. In part, these irrigation channels, known locally as Suonen, stem from dizzying heights, carrying their precious load through channels of wood. In Nepal such channels, known there as Kulos, still exist and are of great agricultural and social importance, despite having long been taken over by more modern methods at home in Switzerland. Here, on a hike along the Massaweg path, you have the opportunity to learn more about the ancient irrigation system, as well as the stories, myths and customs behind it!
