Ägerisee

Ägeri

Situated east of Lake Zug, the Ägerisee lies embedded in a hilly morainal landscape and offers a wide range of hiking, biking and water sports activities. The renowned Battle of Morgarten took place on its shores in 1315, the first battle between the Confederates and the Habsburgs.

Matters are much more peaceful now, day trippers travel across the calm lake, fish restaurants serve the local ‘Rötel’ (Zug golden trout) and walkers and cyclist make their way through the Alpine upland landscape. An extended path and route network through the Ägeri valley offers great scenic variety, for example the easy ‘Seerundweg’ (lake circular path) which can be accomplished on foot (e.g. Nordic walking) as well as on bicycle. There are numerous opportunities to rest and swim en route, such as at the swimming beach in Oberägeri. The round trip also lends itself to being combined with a boat trip.

More demanding, but also more rewarding in its views, is the hiking and cycling tour on the Wildspitz (1580 m), home mountain of the Ägeri valley, and the highest mountain in Zug canton. A further favourite is the panorama trail that runs along the hill ridges, around the lake. Another walk leads along the river Lorze, from Unterägeri towards Zug. On long sections between the Ägerisee and Lake Zug, the small river forms a deep ravine, making it an ideal, shady walking route for hot summer days. The ‘Höllgrotten’ (Hell’s Caves), with their abundant stalactites and stalagmites, can be found in the middle of this wildly romantic Lorze ravine. A popular bike tour also leads to Zug through the Lorze ravine, and then back to the Ägerisee across the ‘Zugerberg’ (Zug mountain).

Comprising three smaller boats, the Ägerisee fleet serves several boat landing stages around the lake and, in addition to regular scheduled services, also offers special cruises from May to October. The sailing schedule includes gastronome cruises such as the “Summer Night’s Cruise” as well as a “Culinary Tour of Switzerland”. The boats may also be charted for special occasions, e.g. the beautifully restored historic motorboat which accommodates 25 passengers.

Not far from the lake you’ll find the ‘Sattel-Hochstuckli’ adventure paradise, complete with a summer toboggan run, trampoline and bouncy castle, a large skate park, climbing tower and beach volleyball area. In winter, the region is transformed into a family-friendly winter sports terrain with 14 km of pistes of 20 km of cross-country ski trails.
