All the more reason why one should not miss this interesting museum, the National Museum of the San Gottardo. It is in a building dating back to 1834 and used to be not only a customs house, but also a rest stop where weary travelers could sleep before continuing their dangerous journey.
The impressive and tastefully renovated building demonstrates vividly, and in a variety of ways, the history of the mountain pass as well as the evolution of transportation and its cultural, historic, political and anthropological importance.
