The village of Capolago lies on the shores of Lake Lugano, in the shelter of the slopes of Monte Generoso.
Originally populated mostly by fishermen, Capolago experienced some development when the lake port was transferred from Riva San Vitale. Today fishing has lost its importance; most of the work force is occupied in the industrial and service sectors.
Although the oldest part of the town today is located between the railway line and the motorway, the old village, which has now completely disappeared, was close to the lake. There used to be a castle as well, built by the residents of Como in 1365, but destroyed by the Swiss in 1517.
The pride of Capolago is to count the Maderni family of artists among those born there, especially the great architect, Carlo, who worked in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, drew the final plans for it and realised its façade.
