The village is on a sunny terrace on Monte Generoso and enjoys a mild climate. It is overlooked by the pyramid-like silhouette of Monte St. Agata. Its territory extends up to the summit of Monte Generoso.
Its origins are very old, as proven by various archaeological diggings; tombs have been found from both the Bronze Age and the Roman Period, as well as a stele dating back to several centuries before Christ. Rovio is the birthplace of numerous artists: the Carlonis, the Baguttis, and the Mazzettis among others.
