The highest commune in the valley that bears its name, the commune of Muggio includes several hamlets that are even higher, as well as several pastures on the slopes of Monte Generoso, which extend up to 1400 metres.
The village was probably inhabited before the 12th century. Indeed, a small Roman cemetery has been discovered above the village. It is the homeland of numerous artists; among them the famous neoclassical architects, Luigi Fontana and Simone Cantoni. The latter worked a lot in Como, where a great number of his buildings can still be admired, especially the majestic Villa dell’Olmo.
