Clues to the origins of Maroggia are scarce. Although some sources contend that it was inhabited during the Insubric (Celtic) period, several centuries before Christ, it was certainly inhabited by the Middle Ages.
The houses, originally grouped around the church, were later built on the mountainous slopes across the Mara. Its sunny climate encourages luxurious vegetation. Maroggia is home to several artists who worked extensively in Italy: the Rodaris, sculptors and architects who worked in Lombardy, especially on the Cathedral in Como; the great architect, Baldassare Longhena, who found fame in Venice; the sculptor, Francesco Somaini, who was Professor of Sculpture at the Academy of Brera in Milan and who took on several projects for the Austrian Empire.
