The village is located in a beautiful region of rolling hills. The territory descends to the Plain of Faloppia towards Chiasso and Campagnadorna to the west. Although we can only be certain that it was inhabited by the 13th century, some settlement appears likely around the year 1000.
Novazzano is home to several renowned artists, such as the Fontanas, originally from Brusata. The most famous Fontana was Carlo, the architect, from the part of the family which settled in Rancate, and is considered one of the most important architects to have worked in Baroque Rome, where he built several constructions, such as the Palazzo Montecitorio, home of the Senate; he also worked at St. Peter’s.
