The village of Monte lies on a very sunny slope in the eastern part of the Mendrisiotto, on the right side of the Muggio Valley.
The etymology probably goes back to the fact the in the 14th century Monte was a hamlet of Bruzella and inhabited by hill folks. Even today there are connections across the valley from one side to the other with picturesque little bridges over the river Breggia.
The population always made its living from an alpine economy, then towards the end of the 19th century sheep-rearing went into a period of progressive decline; this was caused by the emigration of the young. A gradual depopulation followed; in fact in 1850 the village had 170 inhabitants and in 1980 less than 50. In the last twenty years there has been an increase again in the number of families living here. In the summer various families come to spend peaceful holidays in the village, in a countryside that is still intact and enjoyable.
