It is a large town, whose lower part extends into the town of Chiasso. An ancient parochial community, Balerna was once the most important spiritual centre in the region. Today, the evidence of its important historical role is still visible in the ruins of the Pontegana Castle, which are older than the Longobard Period. Excavations have shown that the town dates back to the Roman Period.
Various industries have developed to the point where they have completely replaced agriculture as the primary commercial activity. Among the community’s most famous citizens we must mention the Augustonis, who worked in Rome, the architect Innocente Regazzoni, and the painter-architect Giovanni Tarchini, who was the scene builder at La Scala in Milan, and who designed the town cemetery.
