On the hillside where the Sanctuary stands today there was formerly a castle, first mentioned in 1198, which was destroyed by the Swiss in 1517. Much older evidence shows that the Romans inhabited certain parts of the region; the sarcophagi found on San Giorgio, and, above all, the foundations of a grandiose patrician Roman villa found just above Chiasso with various artefacts dating from the 3rd century. The historical centre has grown with time and seen the development of a number of hamlets, some of which are situated on enviable panoramic viewpoints and have quickly become residential areas.
