Intro

This pilgrimage does not always have to lead to Santiago de Compostela – an impressive section of the Way of St. James is the ViaJacobi, a five hour walk from Schwarzenburg to Fribourg. This stretch is considered the most exciting part of the Way of St. James in Switzerland and has been used by the Jakobspilger - the St. James pilgrims - since the Middle Ages.

Description

The "Fryburg stras" runs in complete tranquillity through the Fribourg Sense District and ends at the chapel of Notre-Dame de Bourguillon.

The Way of St. James also runs through Switzerland as the ViaJacobi: from Lake Constance to Geneva. Lined with churches, monasteries and chapels, it offers a very special hiking experience along historic paths through a diverse cultural landscape.

A particularly fascinating section is the stretch between Schwarzenburg and Fribourg. In the Sense District the rock-hewn passages, paved with river stones, bear witness to the centuries old history of the Way of St. James. A few kilometres further in Tafers the St. James Chapel (St.-Jakobus-Kapelle) tells the story of the "chicken" or "gallows" miracle - a legend told throughout Europe in various forms.

Across wide open fields the trail finally takes you to the Zähringen town of Fribourg with its beautiful historic centre, where amongst other contemporary witnesses the former pilgrims' hostel Hotel de l'Ange is to be found.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
