The fleet of the Zug shipping company consists of four boats of different sizes. The newest motor launch, the MS Zug, won the “iF Design Award”, an international design prize, in 2004. Catering on board is provided by a private company called “Kulinaria”. All food is freshly prepared actually on board – surely a rarity in the age of mass catering. The options range from wholesome on-board elevenses to evening cruises on a variety of culinary themes. The “dessert trip” is especially popular with children and others with a sweet tooth.
There are a number of special excursions in addition to the regular service: holiday tours, a pirate ship (which pursues the regular service boat, with an exciting treasure hunt) or a romantic wedding ride with a symbolic ceremony followed by the wedding reception. In summer, the music boats, such as the salsa, golden oldies and disco boats, are very popular.
There is an extensive network of footpaths, with a number of routes along the side of the lake, and over the gentle hills of the moraine landscape of this region. Instead of walking, you could try the cycling and rollerblading tracks beside the lake. It’s possible to go all round the lake, in several stages, or, for the more ambitious, all in one go – and you can start the tour at a boat stop, or use boats for short cuts. All along the way there are resting places, BBQ areas and idyllic places to swim.
Other places to visit in the vicinity include the zoo in Goldau and the Rigi mountain with its panoramic views – one of the two rack railways begins in Arth-Goldau on the south side of Lake Zug. Also worth a visit are the friendly little town of Zug with its historic Old Town, the Zugerberg with its high moorland scenery, the impressive caves near Baar, with their stalactites and stalagmites, and a guided tour of the cherry cake bakery. After that, of course, you can treat yourself to a slice of this delicious Zug speciality.
