On the San Bernardino loop, for once, the pleasant part happens to take place before the ascent. The well-known Passstrasse is both a blessing and a curse for the population of Misox (or Mesolcina in Italian). The Passstrasse brings transit traffic to the area, but it also makes the whole wide world accessible to the inhabitants. Bikers search for the more peaceful, less busy roads in the relatively barren valley and treat themselves now and then to a sip of pleasantly tasting mountain water.

Hints

San Bernardino - Lago d'Isola - Pian San Giacomo - Cebbia - Mesocco - Andergia - Pian San Giacomo - Lago d'Isola - San Bernardino

From San Bernardino, take the forest trail and ride past Lago dIsola. Shortly after the Saumauer you will come to the old, technically more challenging mule track leading down to Pian San Giacomo. Take the old Pass road and bike down to Mesocco. Once you are down in the valley, ascend to the picturesque little village Andergia, where a pleasantly upward-sloping Alpine path begins. The path winds up along the same slope as the San Bernardio highway. After ascending half-way, turn into the old Pass road and vanquish another 500 altitude meters. The circular tour continues onwards on an Alpine path across the Maiensäss Suossa, once again past Lago dIsola, back to your starting point.
