The castle is the landmark of the city of Zug. Originally it was a stately medieval residence. It is as yet unknown who built the castle. Around 1300 it was in the possession of the Habsburgs, who occasionally pledged it to the knights of Hünenberg. After Zug was compelled to join the Swiss Confederation in 1352, Peter V. von Hünenberg was the first private owner of the castle. In the subsequent centuries it served important Zug families as a prestigious home. Since the extensive renovation from 1979 to 1982 the castle has been housing the Cultural History Museum of the City and Canton of Zug. The diverse rooms of the castle offer interesting insights into the history of Zug. Through the use of multimedia, visitors can access specific information.
