For over half a century, Hildy and Ernst Beyeler collected approximately 200 paintings and sculptures of classical modernity - from Late- and Post-Impressionists such as Cézanne, van Gogh and Monet, to the painters of the Cubist movement, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, to the American Expressionists Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. In addition, there are selected sculptures from overseas.
In 1982, the collection became part of a foundation. Since 1997 it has been housed in the new museum building in Riehen near Basel. The 127-meter-long building was designed by the Italian star architect Renzo Piano. Special world-class exhibitions permit a close look into present-day art.
