Some of the rare pieces in the extensive collection of Martin Bodmer (1899-1971) include the oldest, nearly fully preserved manuscript of the Gospel of St. John, the original manuscript of Grimm's Fairy Tales, Switzerland's only Gutenberg Bible, the original manuscript of a string quintet by Mozart, valuable papyrus works from antiquity and the only nearly completely preserved copy of a comedy written by the Athenian poet Menandros.
Bodmer called his collection the "World Literature Library" - his intention was to encompass the "entire span of human reflection and feeling". Bodmer's collection has been housed since 2003 in a new subterranean building constructed by the star architect Mario Botta. The building has been designed to emphasize what it contains - the collection.
