For Zwingli the Reformation and Humanism belonged together. For him nothing was extant that could not be based on the Holy Scripture. In the summer of 1531, Zwingli designed plans for transforming the Swiss Confederation under the leadership of Zürich and Bern. But the Catholics could not be convinced and an armed conflict ensued. Huldrych Zwingli, who took part as a field chaplain was killed in the Second Kappel War on October 11, 1531. The victors quartered and burned his corpse and scattered his ashes.
