The large Aletsch Glacier is Europe's mightiest ice flow. The Aletsch Forest came into being in the region in front of the glacier, where the soil was no longer covered by eternal ice. Switzerland's oldest stone pine trees grow in this nature reserve, which today has an area of about 410 hectares. The forest has hiking trails, which one is not permitted to stray from.
Nature Reserve Center Villa Cassel houses a natural history exhibition on the Aletsch Forest as well as an Alpine Garden with over 350 plant species. A short walk from Riederalp takes visitors to the erstwhile summer residence of the English banker Ernest Cassel, which is the starting point for various theme trails such as the Cassel Trail, the Moraine Trail or high altitude hikes in the Aletsch region.
