In the past the salmon in the Rhein swam up-river in the spawning season. In the Middle Ages the Rhein was teeming with salmon and they regularly appeared on the dinner table of the Basel folk. So regularly, that certain servants apparently had it written into their contracts that they should not be served salmon at mealtimes more than twice a week!
