Bellavista - Monte Generoso - Bellavista

However, going up the mountain on foot is far more satisfying than simply allowing yourself to be hauled up by the funicular. If you want to walk up from the very bottom, though, you need to be quite fit. There is a difference in altitude of almost 1500 m between Capolago and the summit. Far less strenuous, but all the more enjoyable, is to climb the rest of the way from the Bellavista station to the top.

The starting point for the walk is Capolago station (on the line from Lugano - Chiasso). From there you go up by funicular railway to the Bellavista station. Then a beautiful path leads from Bellavista towards Monte Generoso. With wonderful views of the Valle di Muggio on the way, you reach the top station of the Monte Generoso railway. Then it takes a good 15 minutes more to get to the summit. You walk back down to Bellavista along the same path.
