Description

The 2 1//2-half-hour-long ridge hike from Mt Rothorn by Brienz to Alp Schönbüel just above Lungern is a classic not only because of its phenomenal views but also because one has to take the steam train to get to the starting point. Once on the summit of the 2350-meter-high Rothorn, one hikes along the mountain ridge, enjoying the unfettered views from here. Green-blue Lake Brienz, the mountain chain beginning with Mt Tschingelhorn to Mt Faulhorn, behind that the entire panorama ranging from Mt Säntis in Eastern Switzerland to the Diablerets chain in the Lake Geneva Region. In the North one can glimpse the Entlebuch which seems to be coming in waves, then the slightly foggy Mittelland, and then the Jura. The hike follows the ridge up to Höch Gumme, from where one can take an aerial cable-car from nearby Schönbüel to Lungern.
The trail should only be hiked with sturdy hiking boots that have good treads.
How to get there:
Drive or take public transportation to Brienz via Interlaken or Luzern. From here, take the steam train to the summit of Mt Rothorn. Return via aerial cable-car fromo Schönbüel to Lungern.

The careful planning of a tour will ensure that you also derive the maximum pleasure and enjoyment from it. Please take the time to contact the local information centre and enquire about route and weather conditions before setting off. Your intended trail may be fully or partially closed, depending on the time of year and weather conditions.
