Nearly Touching the Matterhorn

Zermatt

Apart from actually climbing the Matterhorn, there is hardly a more difficult hike in this area than the one leading from the Schwarzsee to Zermatt, passing by Trift and the Trift Gorge. But the effort is well worth it:singular vistas are the hiker's steady companion and an especially impressive part of the hike is that the Matterhorn seems close enough to touch.

Description

The first 1000 meters of altitude difference are easy: take the two aerial cable-cars from Zermatt to Schwarzsee via Furi. The Matterhorn seems close enough to touch but in fact, this mountain's peak would be another 2000 meters of sheer ascent! In the beginning, follow the directional signs to Stafelalp, then to Arben. Here the trail switches to the other side of the mountain and leads to Trift. Here, there is a mountain restaurant, also used by mountain climbers who climb Mts. Ober Gabelhorn and Zinalrothorn. The steep trail down to Zermatt eventually follows a botanical trail, which was inaugurated in 1997.
