Description
In winter the Melchsee-Frutt high Alpine plateau reminds one of the Far North with circling sledge dog teams, and fishermen making holes in the Melchsee ice to fish for lake trout. The plateau lies just on 2,000 metres above sea level and, due to this high altitude, mainly Arctic snow conditions are found here. As you travel up from the valley to this car-free plateau you enter another world altogether. Arrive at Stöckalp from Sarnen by post bus and then take the cable railway up to Melchsee-Frutt. The winter hiking trail starts right at the mountain station and then runs level along the frozen Melchsee before curving at the chapel before reaching the Distelboden. From there it continues on a slight ascent to the Tannensee. Proceed past the snowed-over lake without much of an altitude difference before reaching the Tannalp, where the mountain restaurant of the same name located next to a pretty chapel is the perfect place to take a break. Return to Melchsee-Frutt along the same route.
