Description
The journey from Chur to Arosa passes through a bottleneck. The deep trench created here by the Plessur River was formerly impassable but now rail and road both wend their way through the gorge. The gorge comes to a sudden end in Langwies and the Schanfigg widens into a magnificent basin surrounded by peaks with the sprawling village of Arosa at one end. The beautiful winter trail runs in the opposite direction down the valley. Start out from the Unterseeplatz in Arosa about 500 metres south of the station. Affording magnificent views of the frozen reservoir, the trail first runs above the railway line and then along the Plessur to the old Walser village of Litzirüti. From here on, the route mainly continues through the quiet winter forest. It is not long before you see the imposing reinforced concrete structure of the Langwieser Viaduct. Pass under the mighty railway bridge and after a short ascent reach your destination at Langwies station.
