Description
Like a frozen river, the Great Aletsch Glacier flows from the Jungfraujoch to the Rhone Valley. At 23 km long, it is the largest glacier in the Alps. This magnificent river of ice forms the centre of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy a bird’s eye view of the glacier as you follow this winter hiking trail from the Moosfluh to the Riederalp. To reach the starting point, first take the cable car from Mörel up the Riederalp and then continue up the Moosfluh. The trail makes a gentle descent towards the southwest and the afternoon sun. Down to the right you will see the tongue of the Aletsch Glacier while to the left your gaze will be drawn to the Mischabel group, the Matterhorn and other Valais four-thousanders. The Pro Natura Environmental Education Center is located in the magnificent Villa Cassel on the Riederfurka. Then the trail twists and turns as it continues to Riederalp and here you take the cable car back down to Morel.
