Description
This hiking route has been given a proud name - deservedly. The trail at first leads through the valley along the Maira river and then rises gently in the directionof Durbegia. Later it dips towards the sun terrace of Soglio along the valley flank. Through it all the panorama is defined by High Alpine scenery. Harsh, rough and steep, the granite spires of the Bondascha group rise above the Bergell valley with its lush southern splendor. The landscape - with sparse Alpine to lush Mediterranean vegetation - is full of contrasts, as are the villages, above all Soglio.
Soglio is replete with large 16th to 18th century palaces, built by the Bergellian von Salis dynasty, who gained their wealth in mercenary service. The last stretch of the trail, between Soglio und Castasegna, has a special surprise in store. It leads through wonderful old chestnut forests. On a nature trail the hiker learns about the traditions and culture of Bergell's chestnust harvest.
