Description
This winter trail will not only keep your legs busy but will keep your mind occupied as you pass the plaques bearing quotes from thinkers such as Socrates, Nietzsche and Sartre. And as if that were not enough, the natural beauty here will leave you marvelling at the wonders of creation. The views here are truly one of a kind with the Engadin lakes from St. Moritz to Maloja lying literally at your feet. For this reason, the Philosophers' Trail is considered to be one of Switzerland’s most beautiful winter hiking trails. Start out at the mountain station for the cable railway that goes up from Samedan/Punt Muragl to Muottas Muragl. The route forms a wide loop as it enters the Val Muragl and then in a second loop returns to Muottas Muragl. Following the contours of the land, the trail continues with gentle yet alternating rises and falls. At the end of the tour either take the cable railway back down to Samedan or treat yourself to a racy descent on the only toboggan run in the Engadin.

We enjoyed this walk last winter but it is more strenuous than we expected. Also, the signage was not very good and we only saw one information board about philosophers. Perhaps this year trail maps are available, as we seemed to have taken a wrong track? However, the magnificent views were well worth the effort involved. And we rewarded ourselves with delicious drinks and snacks at the hotel.
