Description
The 4 Vallées mountain sports area in the lower Valais is home to a unique natural attraction – Europe’s oldest and most magnificent larches growing on the Alp Balavaux. There are around 250 trees here of which the greatest is over 800 years old with a diameter of about 3 metres. There is a beautiful winter trail running through this enchanted spot. Start out at the top station of the Nendaz to Tracouet cable railway. This cleared trail slopes gently downwards as it runs along the edge of the Dent de Nendaz towards Alp Balavaux. Along the way you will enjoy the continually changing perspectives of the surrounding peaks and superb views down into the Rhone Valley. After you have passed the Cabane de Balavaux mountain restaurant, the trail continues gently upwards to Prarion and to the valley station of the aerial cableway up the Plan du Fou. The magnificent views make the upward detour very worthwhile. Return to the starting point, the Tracouet cable railway mountain station, along the same route.
