Description
This mountain works its magic on everyone – and its distinctive shape makes the Matterhorn one of the most famous peaks in the world. With an almost ruthless force and, at the same time, an indescribable elegance, this shapely pyramid rises into the air. Enjoy some of the finest views of this 4,478 metre high angular landmark of Zermatt while on a winter hike on the Riffelberg. Start your trip by taking the cog railway up the Gornergrat. Here, a superb panorama awaits you – no fewer than 29 four-thousanders may be seen from the observation deck at the Kulmhotel. Then take the train back to the Rotenboden intermediate station, where the winter trail starts that takes you away from the ski slopes and in a wide arc to Riffelberg station. From there, take the cog railway back to Zermatt. And if you want to enjoy even more of the mountain, you can travel again up to Rotenboden so that you can whiz downhill on Switzerland’s highest toboggan run to Riffelberg.
