Description
During the cold weather, the Pays d'Enhaut plateau in the Vaud Alps is the ideal destination for some carefree hiking fun. Follow the groomed trail along the Sarine and enjoy the winter at its finest – snow-covered alluvial forests line the peacefully murmuring river on whose shady side small rivulets have frozen into bizarrely-shaped ice sculptures. Far from the busy traffic and the ski slopes, you will have now entered a world of soothing solitude where only silence reigns. After setting out from Château d'Oex station, you descend to the Sarine River, which you cross at the Pont Turrian – western Switzerland’s oldest suspension bridge. The trail runs along the river through beautiful mixed forest and up to the hamlet of Gérignoz. It then continues in the same direction over snowy meadows towards Rougemont. At the valley station for the Videmanette cable railway, branch off to the left and continue on to the village. Cross the Sarine and, after a short climb, you will reach the route destination at Rougemont station.
