The hike connecting Gspon to Saas Grund is an all-time favorite among persons who know this area well. It is part of the 'Great Walser Trail' which traces the historic West-East migration pattern of the Walser. High above the gorge that houses the babbling Saaser Vispa, the trail is mostly just above the tree-line. Because of this, it offers wonderful views of the glaciers of the mighty Mischabel range.

Stalden marks the fork between the Saas and the Matter Valley. It is from here that the aerial cable-car goes up to Gspon. Looking down, one can see all the way to Visp to the North and all the way to the Monte Moro Pass to the South. The high alpine trail ascends slightly and then reaches its highest point at Mattwaldalpa. A little further along is Heimischgartu, home to a charming St. Joseph's chapel of Walser origin. From here one can easily see Saas Balen. Pass the chapel and hike towards Saas Grund. In the last part of this hike there are fantastic views of Saas Fee and its surrounding mountains.
