Description
In the mid-19th century the Mittlere Bridge was the city's only Rhine crossing. Four ferries that still cruise from one riverbank to the other serve as a floating pedestrian bridge and are less of a traffic service than an enjoyable tourist attraction - not least due to the "Fährimänner" – the ferrymen. They are also one of the topics covered on the Rheinpfad, which starts in the middle of the Quartier Kleinbasel and illuminates all the facets of a living river.
Winding its way picturesquely all the way along the banks of the river, the trail takes you for about three hours from the modern metropolis with its huge port facilities out to the countryside and deep into the past, to Switzerland's largest open-air archaeological museum in Augusta Raurica. This world famous archaeological site takes visitors back to Roman times, when up to 20,000 people lived here, and provides the thrilling finale to a fun hike with lots of opportunities for learning.
