Kubus
Overview
Intro
This extension to the "Bernisches Historisches Museum" (Historical Museum) is sure to amaze with its exhibition hall sunk into the ground and its significant extension programme.
In 2009, after the three years it took to build the Kubus, the museum now had enough space to properly store and attractively display its collection. This imposing building was designed by the Biel architectural firm, :mlzd, with the company prevailing against the other 15 competitors in the architectural competition that had attracted a total of 120 applications.
The extension plan included a 1200m2 exhibition hall with walk-in roof terrace, floors allocated to storerooms and office space for the "Bernisches Historisches Museum" as well as offices and a library with reading room for the city archives. The exhibition hall is sunk into the ground: There is an area on the roof that is accessible from the park and the entrance hall. To the rear, the office building is sealed off in a fortress-like fashion.
