Border stories: Leg I

The journey begins on the shores of Lake Geneva. From there the itinerary follows the border with Savoie, through the Portes du Soleil, around the Val d’Illiez to the Emosson reservoir, then down to the railway link and the road from Martigny to Chamonix at the Mont Blanc.

Description

Ascent through the Morge valley to the mountain ridges of the Franco-Swiss Portes du Soleil, a popular skiing region in the winter and a mountain biker's paradise in the summer. At the head of the valley, at the Col de Cou, the route goes past the ringing station for migratory birds and over the Dents Blanches (not to be confused with the Dent Blanche in the Val d’Hérens) across difficult terrain to the Mont Ruan and the dinosaur footprints and hydroelectric dam at Emosson. Then through the Barberine valley down to Châtelard, a border station along the narrow gauge railway and the main road to Chamonix.
