The particular conceptual points of departure for this show are the video installations by Douglas Gordon. It is here complemented by other works from the holdings of the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel, the Emanuel Hoffmann-Foundation, and a few loans. Man Ray, Andy Warhol, and Louise Bourgeois are represented as well as younger artists like Paul Chan and Tacita Dean.
Born in Basel, Jakob Christoph Miville (1786 –1836) was a widely traveled painter and draftsman. A sojourn in Rome and tours of the Alps informed his early heroic landscapes. But it was only during his stay in Russia (1809 –1817) that he developed his distinctive feeling for nature: the vast expanses and sceneries he encountered in Crimea and the Caucasus inspired his evolution into a Romantic landscape artist.
The Christmas market is always held in Baden's downtown core on the Wednesday following the second Sunday of Advent. This traditional market features mainly small vendors who display and sell their own handmade Christmas items. Culinary treats such as crepes, spring rolls, "Raclette" potatoes and cheese, and "Rösti" potato pancakes are also on the menu, of course. Anyone who wants to experience a short excursion in the region can reach Baden's lovely Old Town in just 16 minutes by train.
