Up until 1,900 years ago a terrifying dragon is said to have been up to mischief in a large cave at Lake Thun. Only the wandering Irish monk Beatus succeeded in driving away the dragon. Today the marvelous grotto world can be entered without risk.
The views are unto themselves on this challenging ridge hike connecting the Niederhorn (1949 m.a.s.l.), easily accessible by chairlift, with Mt. Gemmenalphorn (2061 m.a.s.l.) and which veers down towards Habkern. The snowy peaks of the Bernese Alps vie with the karst cliffs of Hohgant and the Prealpine Region.
Haunting moorland, mysterious caves and a sea of alpine flowers: the landscape around the Hohgant soon charms its visitors. Especially on Lombachalp, which together with Sörenberg makes up one of Switzerland’s largest and most impressive stretches of moorland.
