The ViaRhenana, one of Switzerland's longest hiking trails, runs for ten days along the historic waterway between Untersee and Hochrhein. The fourth stage takes four hours from Schaffhausen to Rheinau with its baroque monastery church.
Over the mediaeval Old Town of Schaffhausen looms the imposing Munot fortress. The houses of the Old Town are richly decorated with oriel windows and lavishly painted facades. The town, located on the Upper Rhine between the Black Forest and Lake Constance, and surrounded by vineyards, is a popular destination for holidays and day-trips.
Neuchâtel, called Neuenburg in German, has a rich cultural and architectural past. The Castle and the Collegiate Church (built in the Gothic style in the Middle Ages, a Reformed Church), which can both be seen from afar, are the city's landmarks.
