Currencies - Exchange, Power and Wealth

This exhibition shows the many different forms that currency can take in a variety of sub-Saharan African cultures, Southeast Asia and Oceania. It features metal tools and weapons, wooden and basket-woven shields, textiles and jewellery decorated with materials considered precious (shells, feathers, amber, pearls). Diverted from their primary function, these objects become trading instruments and take on a symbolic, sociopolitical and religious character.
