Long views into the picturesque Simmental valley

Wonderful high-altitude route from Gurnigel over the Leiterenpass up to the Stockhorn

The imposing Gantrisch mountain chain stretches eastwards from the Gurnigel region, ending with the mighty rocky dome of the Stockhorn. Right along this chain runs a mountain path offering magnificent views across the Bernese Alps and Lake Thun and down into the Simmental valley.

Stockhorn – and striking Horn

Stockhorn, which has a height of 2,190 meters, is the highest peak of the Stockhorn Range. The mountain consists of a nearly vertical slab of rock, so that it appears either wide or pointed, depending on your perspective.

It’s not hard to pinpoint the distinctive head of rock at the entrance to the Bernese Oberland – but the fact that you can stand pretty much on top to enjoy views direction Thun, Aare Valley and Bern as far as Jura is known to few.
