Difficult ascents, some of which require skilful technique, define the first part of the circuit leading through the countryside of Neuchâtel. A special treat awaits you - the spectacular downhill ride from Chaumont to the town by the lake. This downhill stretch reveals landscapes unrivalled in their beauty. The broad plain of the little-known Val de Ruz contrasts starkly with the steep drop of the slopes of the Chaumont. The Jura heights surrounding the valley look wonderfully tranquil and secluded. From time to time you'll stumble upon a cosy Jurabeizli, where you can fortify yourself with a square meal before the next ascent.

Each year in early autumn, hundreds of cycling enthusiasts assemble in Charmey to display their prowess in the Gruyère Bike competition. It's all a friendly occasion, of course. The racecourse has two circuits, one for the normally insane and one for the criminally deranged (!). The route, you see, contains well over 2'000 metres of uphills and downhills, as well as enormous variety of trails. Wonderful and technically simple single trails alternate with tricky downhills, but there are always sections where you can stop and recover your breath while marvelling at the kind of scenery that looks as if had come straight out of a picture book.
