Spalen Gate

Here you will find one of the finest city gateways in Switzerland. It was built at the end of the 14th century as part of the outer city wall. Particularly worth seeing are the original fortifications, the photographic artefacts and the old maps of the city.

The Spalentor is the grandest and most impressive of the three city gates that still remain of the fortifications dating back to 1400.

Piazza del Mercato e Municipio

This splendid building on the market square was built in various stages between the 16th and 19th centuries and is still today the seat of the government and Parliament of the canton of Basel City. Particularly worth seeing are the council chambers, the historic inner courtyard, the romantic arcades and the imposing tower.
