Manufactura - Tessanda weavers

The Tessanda (hand weavers) in the Val Müstair (Münstertal) now has 18 looms and employs 8 people. Here in this 80 year-old traditional enterprise, pupils from the valley and all over Switzerland receive training in an occupation that has become rare nowadays. In the sales outlet in the middle of Sta. Maria there is a wide choice of hand-woven treasures, including fashion accessories, gifts and items for use in the home.

During the First World War, soldiers from three armies faced each other on the Stelvio and Umbrail Pass, and traces of this can still be found here today. The exhibition provides background information about the "1914/18 border occupation" that is of great interest to military historians and was an important part of Switzerland's history. The main item in the exhibition is a large relief model showing the military installations on a scale of 1:10,000.
