The Furka mountain route was supposed to be shut down. Since the opening of the Furka base tunnel in the year 1982 it is actually no longer required. The train route, which is a sight worth seeing, was preserved thanks to a private initiative.
The name of the village, Gletsch, says it all: it is clearly a place near a glacier. And indeed, that was once the case.
The Barefootpath leads across meadows and moss covered forest paths from the Hotel and Nature Resort Handeck through the forest reserve Widmannshöhe.
