Niesen and Stockhorn in view

Walk along the Jakobsweg from Thun to Gwatt and on via Amsoldingen to Wattenwil

The walk from Thun to Wattenwil leads in a wide sweep first along Lake Thun and then through an undulating area across into the Gürbetal valley. There are fantastic views of the mountains of the Bernese Oberland all along the way. At first, your gaze is drawn to the Niesen, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, with the lake glittering in the sunshine in the foreground. Later, the walk is dominated by the rocky dome of the Stockhorn. In the area between Thun and the Stockhorn range is a string of little or even tiny lakes that are popular tourist spots, especially at weekends.

At this mountain restaurant with its spacious terrace, you just have to stop and enjoy the panoramic view of the mountains and Lake Thun. Cyclists and motor-cyclists, hikers, climbers and touring motorists all enjoy the many culinary delights here. Have a party, organise a music camp, hold a fondue party in a tepee, go for a ride or a snowshoe walk – these are just a few of the things the Gurnigel mountain restaurant has to offer.

Via ferrata Gantrisch

Challenging in places, with vertical and slightly overhanging sections (categorised as a KS 4 climb). You do need to be quite fit, and certainly sure-footed with a good head for heights. Approach via the Gurnigel water divide, the start is just below the Leitern Pass. Six hours (there and back) from the water divide. You can hire a via ferrata set from the Gurnigel mountain inn.

Nature park and cross-country paradise

45 km of cross-country ski trails for traditional skiing and skating combine the main departure points: Schwarzenbühl/Selital, Ottenleuebad and the Gurnigel water divide. The network is supplemented by several somewhat more demanding secondary routes. The cross-country ski trails with reliable snowfalls and views of the Gantrisch range, Lake Thun and the Alps are suitable for dedicated sportspersons as well as amateur cross-country skiers.

Peace, views, space, sun and lengthy distances – the Gantrisch cross-country ski region and beautiful pre-Alp landscapes along with the Gantrisch nature park, on the threshold to the city of Bern, is a most popular spot for top athletes and ski hikers alike.
