The journey up to the natural cavern is an adventure in itself. From Vitznau on the lakeshore, trains of Europe’s oldest cog railway climb nearly 500 vertical metres in about 7 minutes to reach Gruebisbalm station. From here, a gentle, 10-minute walk leads along an illuminated trail through pastures and woodland to the cave entrance, behind a waterfall.

Inside the cave is a small lake, and room to host buffet dinners with up to 350 guests seated at wooden benches and tables. Specialities include the Indian Cave Dinner, featuring delicious cuisine from the subcontinent; other Swiss and regional menus are also on offer.

The stage can be used for dancing and entertainment: DJs, alphorn players, musical groups and performance artists can all be booked. The cavern can be decorated with flowers, and the lake illuminated magically with floating candles.

• Trains run regularly until 11pm; free travel with Swiss Pass and Swiss Flexi Pass.
• The cave can be heated, but warm clothing is still recommended.
