Monte San Giorgio, which lies on the southern shore of Lake Lugano, is famous for its abundance of well-preserved reptile and fish fossils.

Palaeontologist discovered 40 dinosaur species, 80 fish species and 100 invertebrates in this small area. Among the most spectacular fosils are those of salt water reptiles, some of them up to 6 meters long. All excavation sites are open to the public.

The trail begins at "Fontana" (old wash house) - near the first group of houses after Meride - on the road to Serpiano (600 m) and ascends to "Casina" (900 m), traversing on almost flat terrain the short valley section of Val Porina.
It then descends to the forests near Serpiano (700 m) and finally returns to the starting point on a slight inclined slope. To walk this nature hike you need a little more than four hours, including the stops and informational markers. Strong and high walkings boots are recommended.
