Mt.Eiger is responsible for many myths. Especially legendary is-and remains-the mountain's North Face. And whoever has hiked along the gigantic cliffside understands that there is indeed something magic about this mountain. Looking up to find the distant summit, one encounters a sheer wall of stone for hundreds of meters.
The point of departure for this spectacular hike is at the Eigergletscher station of the Jungfrau Train. The trail is at the very foot of the Eiger North Face and descends steeply from the very beginning. From up here, one can see the mid-point in the form of Alpiglen but hikers will find themselves looking up more than down: the sheer rock wall is just too impressive to ignore blithely. Once in Alpiglen, tired hikers can take the Scheidegg train back to Grindelwald but the intrepid can continue through fragrant forests and meadows. Once in Grindelwald Grund, Grindelwald, the end destination, is very close.
Starting point: Station Eigergletscher of the Jungfrau Train.
Destination: Grindelwald Dorf.
Take the train to Kleine Scheidegg and continue to the station Eigergletscher by Jungfrau Train.
Walking time: 3 h 40 min
