Holiday destinations in Switzerland

Stoos is a family-friendly destination for holidays and excursions, located in Schwyz, in the heart of Central Switzerland, high above Lake Lucerne. This small, car-free winter and summer resort is an attractive place for all kinds of sporting activities or just relaxing away from the noise of traffic and hustle and bustle.

The town of Zug, with its attractive location by Lake Zug, its picturesque Old Town and culinary specialities is an attractive destination for holidays or excursions in Central Switzerland. Zug is also highly rated by business people: because of the low rates of taxation, the canton of Zug is a popular place to do business, and many international companies have settled here.

"Of all the places I know, this is the dearest and most interesting to me", declared Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, when he travelled through the Ursern valley three times in 1779. The Ursern valley (canton Uri) at the foot of the Gotthard Pass is one of the most impressive upland valleys in Switzerland. Andermatt (1436 m), the largest of the three villages in the valley, is at the crossroads of the mountain passes from north to south and from east to west.

The resort of Beckenried (435 m) is on the south bank of Lake Lucerne at the foot of the Klewenalp with views of the popular and famous Rigi mountain on the other side of the lake. Near to Beckenried, on the panoramic terrace high above the lake, lie the villages of Emmetten and Seelisberg. Cable-cars provide access to the family-friendly walking and skiing area of Klewenalp and Stockhütte.

The family-friendly holiday region of Lungern-Schönbüel is on the Brünig Pass halfway between Lucerne and Interlaken. The beautiful scenery in the canton of Obwalden, with the emerald green Lake Lungern, appeals to walkers, water sports fans and lovers of nature and in winter provides a family-friendly skiing area.

Arth-Goldau, the Schwyz twin locality located between Lakes Zug and Lauerz, is the starting point for the trip up the Rigi, as well as a Lake Zug boat cruise. The alluvial fan of the huge avalanche is now home to the renowned Goldau Zoo. Last but not least, Arth-Goldau is an important railway node along the Gotthard line.

Gersau occupies a romantic location on the southern slopes of the Rigi by Lake Lucerne, on what is sometimes called the "Riviera of Central Switzerland". High above Gersau is the Rigi-Scheidegg area, both a paradise for walkers and a small winter sports area, with excellent views.

Close to the capital of the canton, Schwyz, and the place of pilgrimage Einsiedeln, in an idyllic, wide open alpine foothill landscape at 900 to 2200 metres, lie the holiday and sports destination of Hoch-Ybrig and the sunny villages of Ober- and Unteriberg.

The tranquil central Swiss holiday and excursion region around Küssnacht am Rigi lies where Tell once felled his adversary, Gessler. The Seebodenalp is a vista-rich plateau half-way up the “queen of the mountains”, the Rigi.

Switzerland’s largest upland moor, in Central Switzerland between Rothenthurm and Biberbrugg, has been successfully preserved. The broad moorland landscape is an important conservation area for plants and animals, but also a fascinating place for relaxation and adventure for visitors.
